Does anyone know why celtic languages got transliterated so bizarrely? Why did English speakers assign letters to the native runes in a purposely non-phonetic way?

It's regular. As long as it's regular, the English uses of the letters aren't really important (like with Pinyin). If it helps, you could think of it as a "Welsh alphabet" some of whose letters coincidentally happen to be the same shape as those in the "English alphabet".
Please shove something about Llanfair on here. And the fact that Will and Kate live there.
