A bit of an additional meta reference in that Rip actually predates the Doctor, and Doctor Who incorporated some elements from the comic books (most notably the Time Lords, which are in some respects an Expy of the Time Masters).
In the original Rip Hunter - Time Master, the Time Masters are a four-person exploration team comprising Rip, his assistant, his love interest, and her kid brother. (And I'm not even sure they were called "Time Masters" as a team name until the 1990 Time Masters miniseries.) The Legends Time Masters seem to be based on Rip's other team, the Linear Men, who were introduced in 1991, long after the Time Lords.
