Veritas episode. Ok, so, was I the only one to notice the huge plot hole on that episode? How could Beckett's mother have a tape of Bracken admiting to her murder hidden inside porcelain elephants? She became a ghost and hid it there and wrote that stuff on her diary or she did that BEFORE her murder? And if she did? Why wouldn't she take it to the police? I mean, screw protecting Montgomery, the guy was saying she was going to have her killed.

OK, IMO the entire series bears some considerable resemblance to the dresden files. This is not a shout out, nor allusion, nor anything I can think of. what does this go under?

Moved from YMMV.

  • Actor Allusion: ? Maybe. A minor character in the opener to season three, named Xander Doyle. Really? Buffy + Angel? Maybe.

Could be a Shout-Out, but unless the actor was played by the same actor who played one of these other characters it's not an Actor Allusion — and on a related subject, not everything that vaguely reminds one of a Joss Whedon production is an Allusion or Shout-Out just because Nathan Fillion was in Firefly

Heroes Want Redheads- Umm, his first wife is one, his second is a blonde, Beckett is brunette as is Ellie Monroe (the only other women Castle is shown sleeping with in the show) and his first love. Does this trope still apply? Not sure it does. I know his mom and daughter are both redheads but surely that's can't be reasoning here (squick!)

During the first season, Becket was very auburn.

YMMV, but I don't think she is particularly auburn. Close up of her in the first main pic [[here http://www.chud.com/25659/dvd-review-castle-season-1/]].

In certain lights it does appear quite auburn-y, but it's been a lot more clearly brown for a while now.

I've seen it mentioned on a few pages that Beckett created a fan club for Castle before she even met him and i was wondering which episode this was revealed in?

Not sure if she created it, but I do recall a few things that make it fairly obvious she's in some fan circles for his books.

What sort of things? I've been catching up on the show and i haven't picked up on anything like that.

The first episode reveals she's a big fan of his books, even the obscure ones.

I recall one episode had her posting something on a Castle fansite. I wish I could remember which one.

Someone at some point mentions her running a Castle fanclub. Was it her FBI-based ex? (I think so. Will check "Little Girl Lost" and "A Death in the Family" when I have time.)

She gets a preview of the cover to "Naked Heat" which is only available to people who subscribe to his website/forum/mailing list at least.

Save for that last one, all others are never confirmed. It's an ongoing project of Castle, where he sometimes tries to tease her into confess she a fan. The pilot makes it obvious she's read and owns several of his books. Will did confirm for us there was a two hours waiting for a signed copy og one of his books in 1x09, but I can't remember if she went herself or if she sent him.

IIRC Will mentions that Kate herself stood in line.

Is it really necessary to have character tropes potholed wherever the character is mentioned? For example, we have under Actor Allusion: "Beckett gives him a 'Hell of a shot, Castle', Castle replies..." Should we start pruning those away where redundant/unnecessary?

And also, Ryan is not always the Butt Monkey.
LoopyChew
02:33:52 AM Mar 6th 2011
Sometimes It Makes Sense in Context, but if the pothole has absolutely no reason to be there (like your above example), I think it could be pruned.

Also, Ryan gets to be the Chew Toy a lot more often than he is a Butt Monkey. I suspect a lot of people don't know that Chew Toy exists. I didn't until a couple of weeks ago.

So if we wanted to list a few things about the Nikki Heat novels, would we do that here, or would it be a separate Wiki entry? I ask because there's one specific thing that's so incredibly meta that it makes my head hurt thinking about the best way to go about doing it.

The bit in question is the fact that, in the Nikki Heat novels, there is a judge character who is "inspired" by a judge character in show (played by Dan Castellaneta), whose name is Horace Simpson. During a poker game, Nikki even compares Horace Simpson to Homer Simpson, thus comparing a fictional character written by another fictional character to a fictional character the second fictional character knows, played by yet another fictional character whose actor in Real Life also happens to voice that first fictional character and oh dear I've gone cross-eyed.

So, basically, would we have a Main/NikkiHeat page, a Castle/NikkiHeat page, or would we leave all Nikki Heat "mythology" in the Castle page, in light of all the meta that takes place in Heat Wave alone, on top of Naked Heat and potential sequel books?

Yeah, i want a special page for the books too. For the same reasons. And my head hurts too when I think about that... lol.

I also vote special page. Any references to Nikki and the books in the show go on the show page, anything from the book goes on the book page.

Nikki Heat page sounds about right to me.
DoctorNemesis

Alternatively, we could do a split at the bottom and put the Nikki Heat references there? Might be easier than keeping track of how everything fits together across two separate pages?

I'm not opposed to a separate page either, but just throwing it out there as an option.

It's easy to start a page we just need fanfics to recommend, and I haven't found many that I'd recommend. If you want I can start the page, and then you can add what you want.

Not 100% sure about this one:

Since it seems to suggest that Castle still works pretty damn hard at what he does; he's just chosen to do something different. "Deciding not to be a cop" doesn't equal "laziness", after all.

Happy to be overruled, but I think it needs reworking to suggest how exactly Castle is lazy.
surgoshan
04:10:00 PM Jun 28th 2011
I don't think he's lazy; he puts a lot of effort into the things he does (pranking Alexis's date, for example). I think he just lives his life by the Rule of Fun.

I hope this hasn't been addressed before, but would Castle be an example of Fun Personified? Or is he not because he can get serious every once in a blue moon? Just curious.

Took the liberty of replacing the page image; I loved the caption (and my new one doesn't compare), but it seemed like it was only fair to have a picture including Beckett wherein Beckett wasn't all blurry and indistinct.

One problem, though; I can't get it right justified, and every time I try it screws up the formatting. So I've left it on the left for now, but if someone a bit more competent than me knows how to do this...

I agree... But I dislike the new picture. May I suggest one of these three alternatives?

option 1 option 2 option 3

I don't just change it myself mostly because I'm not sure about the sizing regulations. But partly because my tastes aren't necessarily the best.

Does the new robbery detective Demming count as The Scrappy just yet? I was wondering if there was a trope that fit him because he hasn't done anything wrong but yet he's unlikable for getting in the way of the Castle/Beckett 'ship. I can't say in confidence that he is The Scrappy or The Wesley since I am just one troper who doesn't like him and I know he already has been put down as The Paolo but is there another term for a character who gets in the way of a canon relationship? Just food for thought.

We need some sort of solution for readability with all the quotes. The linespaces around the quotes works for me. Looks pretty good. Certainly better than doing nothing.

Naturally if someone has a better idea, it's worth a try.
LoopyChew
05:17:26 AM Apr 23rd 2010
I dunno. To me, the quotes feel better without linespaces—it breaks the flow. If I'm scrolling through the tropes, the only time things get broken up are around quotes, and thus draws TOO much attention to the quotes. That's why I asked if we could discuss it here in the first place.

Okay, as I raised above, I've merged the two lists into one and combined a few entries that were doubled up; as well as the problem of possible double-ups, it seemed that a lot of examples in the 'series as a whole' list revolved around specific episodes anyway. It's just a bit easier to manage this way, IMHO.

So apparently the name "Rick Castle" comes from the fact that, pronounced quickly enough, it could sound like "Rick Asshole." (One of the previously-considered names was "Nick Castle.") Is that a Punny Name, Meaningful Name, or something else? (How about the fact that they keep on making fun of the other diminutive for "Richard" without ever actually USING it?)

Mmm, there probably is a bit of a putting crap pass the radar. Memorable is the instance in 1x07, during the funraiser, where Beckett ask "Did you know the call you "The White Wale?" "Really? Not Moby..." "NO"

Just as a matter of formatting; is it strictly necessary that we split the lists in two? Not really a big deal (to me, anyway), but it seems that it leaves the page prone to a lot of double examples.

Isn't there a trope about someone who is basically a bad guy but does good? In Boom! Castle reaffirms the line in the intro that the only difference between him and a serial killer is that he only does it on paper. For those that haven't seen it yet, he basically realizes what the villain is doing because he'd be doing that way too (or at least, that's what he'd write about happening).

The FBI profiler in that episode actually lampshades that. When Castle realizes that he subscribes to a number of the publications she's profiled the killer as reading, she points out that he kills people for a living.

  • And then it turns out they've been dating for quite a while.

I'm not 100% sure, so someone might be able to correct me, but I think this is a mistake; we met Ryan's long-term girlfriend in that episode, but I don't remember anything about Esposito being revealed. Happy to be corrected, of course.
