About the Unexpectedly Obscure Answer things: I learned basic algebra in sixth grade (things like x+5=7 and I think we did really really basic systems of equations), so unless the curriculum changed that significantly between when I was in sixth grade and when the participants were - which is, what, 25 years? - I don't understand the obscurity bit.
"the player could opt to play a bonus question to increase their winnings by 10" - is that "$10" or "by a factor of 10"? The bonus question trope below implies the latter, but currently it's unclear.
