WWT was infact gay, he just knew what the rest of us men liked. David Gerrold accused Gene of not liking gays, but Gene liked WWT.
Having just watched this episode, I gotta say... The double-standards trope is partially false. While it doesn't take the full severity of a male raping a female, the whole scene isn't set as if Kirk just had 'another boning', rather, he is horrified, confused, pretty much like a person who was -roofied-. The music itself is somber, there is a darker shade to the scene... At every second he fights the compelling nature of Elaan's tears and both Spock and Mccoy react as if his friend was Poisoned. There is no 'oh the captain is at it again'. And in the end, when Elaan asks him to never forget her, he says "I don't have a choice".
