Well then what genre should it be? An MMORPG has lots of people packed into a single environment, has quests that are givin be others, and is focused on advancing your character.

Well, that part is fine by itself, but countries aren't actually "servers" and there's no such thing as a "status effect". It's a fun idea, but you might as well be describing something completely different.

That's the joke. It's treating life like a game, and Real Life fits the criteria for an MMORPG rather well.
Treating it like an MMORPG is too inaccurate; I demand propositional accuracy...
