I struggle to think of any other reason for why he'd be gone without his companion

Is it really implied they killed him? To me that raises its own questions, the biggest being that if he died then why didn't the trio take the Teal Mask? It's not like it was hidden, Ogerpon found it just laying there in its home. Vanishing also can imply many things besides death.
