I agree with splitting the article, but perhaps the switch should be earlier temporally — perhaps "The Franchise Age of Hollywood", starting with Titanic (1997) and onward from there, thus including the rise of the superhero movie and the hegemony of franchise movies such as the Fast and the Furious movies. (This also means we can copy-paste verbatim from the article below the heading of the same name.)

It's OK with me. But nevertheless, I'm not sure if the cutoff point should be 1997 or 2001.

2001 would be better, I'd say.
We'll also need to cover the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes at some point.
This article is getting really bloated, covering the events in film for the last 40+ years. How many of you think it is time to divide it into a new age for the more recent events?
I propose we create a new article, "The Digital Age of Hollywood," with the possible starting point of the general closure of the Blockbuster Video rental chain in 2010, while the DVD was at its maximum market penetration with the Format War of the HD successor underway while Netflix's streaming service was beginning to make its presence known.
