I don't remember what the name of the book was but there was a book I listened to a long time ago that used a truth serum. I think that the main character of the book was an ordinary goat. Near the beginning of the book the goat's owner dies and it is implied he was killed by a man who was a guest in his house who pushed him into a river. At the end of the book the suspect is trapped in a cabin with two other men, and also the goat, during a long blizzard and they get him to confess what he did using some kind of tea or other beverage that forces people to tell the truth. I think they explained that the beverage was some kind of Native American recipe.
