IMO, this trope can have unfortunate implications. It portrays women as not strong enough to get over things when done poorly. It is a woman with the baggage 90% of the time. Also, it often makes the new guy look like a jerkass for wanting her to have a happy normal loving relationship with him rather than build a shrine to her eternal victimhood. I think that a person who survives abuse to become stronger and build a stable, happy, loving family makes a good story too, even if it minimizes Wangst.

Hmmm, I would agree that this trope is usually female...except the examples right now are 50/50. Plus, this can often be a way for writers to acknowledge a past relationship instead of acting like it never happened when writing a character in a new relationship (like the Avatar example).
