Why doesn't this page have Mystique from the X-Men movies (either version is fine) as its page image? When she morphs into people, she morphs into their clothes too, but her default form is naked and blue and covered in scales (the last one probably makes an image of her Safe a For Work).

I removed this entry from Tabletop Games:

  • Dungeons & Dragons. The Doppleganger Shapeshifter monster is able to form its body into the clothing and equipment of its chosen victim. It can then take off that clothing, put on entirely different clothing, then revert to its natural form... which has no clothing. Honestly, try not to think about it too much.

The way this is written, it makes it sound like the Doppelganger magically conjures and dispels clothing rather than forming it out of its own body, which would be Not An Example of this trope.

Attempting to confirm this, I tried to do a little research on how the Doppelganger's shapeshifting works in the D&D rules. The best I could find was this page on the D&D Wiki, which describes it as a supernatural Change Shape effect. The page on that effect specifies that any gear carried during shapeshifting that can't be used by the new form falls off, whereas any gear that can still be carried changes size to match the new form, which seems to support that the Doppelganger magically alters or conjures / dispels clothing rather than forming it out of its own body.

However, several sources I found made oblique references to the ability working slightly differently in different editions of the rules or between different D&D settings, so this may not be the case across all of D&D. If there are editions or settings in which the Doppelganger monster would count as an example, please feel free to add them with proper context.

In the meantime, since the example as currently written does not count as an example, I'm leaving it off the page for the time being.
