That is in-fact the case. It's almost outright stated in the movie that he died and was sent back as Gandalf the White.
This is a nod to the lore of the series in which the 'Wizards' of the world, including Gandalf, Saruman, Radaghast, etc, are actually the LOTR equivalent of Angels, and upon Gandalf's death, he was sent back with a new purpose and more power to replace Saruman, who had become essentially a fallen angel.
If this trope DEFINITELY ENDS IN DEATH, then why is Gandalf an example? Unless I forgot that he actually did die and came back to life.
