Anyone know of any good inversions of this trope? Like where the ghost-girl ends up being a good guy?

While they are not necessarily "good" or a hero per say but the Erma comic is really good.

Onryo usually does not harm the wrongdoer directly because of honor culture (Honor Before Reason) mentality, prevalent among bushi class. As the wrongdoer was held responsible for the appearances of onryo he was also considered responsible for all the harm that the ghost caused to other people. And harming innocent people who gave no reason to be treated in such way (even taking into account a caste-based Values Dissonance) was extremely dishonorable. In the culture where men were expected to stoically withstand any direct torment, such dishonoring was considered extremely cruel punishment.
