It gets better: about half of the world's steel production is from electric arc furnaces. Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijWwfcw0FOo&feature=related. Here's the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_arc_furnace Essentially, man-made lightning is used to melt down scrap metal - the best description would be an electric volcano, so I think that real-life lightning and lava tropes may apply here.
