I don't know nearly enough about this, which is why I'm putting this in Discussion, but from what I've seen, this seems to be really common in Japanese works of all sorts. I get the feeling that - and again I don't know as much as I should, please correct me if this is a wrong conclusion - this might be mildly transgressive in Japan? If there are social conventions stressing neatness, tidiness, and setting limits on public displays of affection with taboos surrounding (for instance) kissing in public, then a kiss involving spit trails would break a lot of boundaries all at once?
