"Prodigal" does not mean "exiled, but then returned."

Is anybody aware of this?

Yes, and I also find that annoying. The point of the parable is that the Abrahamic God's love is like a father's; it's given even if unearned. (The wasteful son is loved anyway.)

Added:

Note that "prodigal" means "wasteful"; the correct definition is used in the biblical parable, but the word has come to be associated with exile and return.
