I hate to dethrone a classic, but Cyrano De Bergerac doesn't seem to be the Trope Maker. I have encountered two operas with feature clear instances of the trope, both of which predate Rostand's play (which was written in 1897): Mozart's Don Giovanni (1787), and Gounod's Faust (1859). In Don Giovanni, it even seems to appear as an Unbuilt Trope.
