The word is almost always translated into English as "demons" or mistranslated (by tradition) as "ogres". Contrary to the common mistranslation, Oni starkly differ from traditional depictions of Western ogres.
With due respect, remembering how in fairy tales ogres tend to be intelligent and in possession of magical items and powers, I don't really see how Oni should be "starkly different" from traditional depictions of Western ogres. I suggest this sentence should be reworked.
