What intrigues me about this trope is that it always implies a sense of distance. How did "old money" families make their money in the first place, and how long would they have to be established as wealthy before the "old" part would make any sense? Surely these families had to start from somewhere, and immediately after their fortune was established, could they be considered as "nouveau riche" as the people they would apply that label to several generations down the line? The whole thing has an air of cyclicality to it, and I wonder if there are any examples that deconstruct how manufactured the concept can be.
