What exactly is the difference/distinction between this trope and Patronymic? If there is supposed to be one, it is not made very clear in the text.

The fact it is also a frequently used Stock Phrase that is culturally significant in heroic film and literature.

Yeah, but... anyone using patronymics kind of has to say that phrase, or there would be no use of a patronymic.

Samson is not an example of this. It's from biblical Hebrew, Shimshon, meaning sun
Given that the president of Iceland is currently Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson (try typing that out with a standard keyboard) we might want to drop the president as an example of Icelandic names.
