For the Grimlock example in "Western Animation," the "GI Joe vs. the Transformers" Vol.2, Issue 4, had implied the Dinobots were originally 5 Cybertron-built Autobots instead of Earth-built ones. They only got to have their dinosaur forms when Teletran 3 warped them into Earth's pre-history. And then kick Decepticon all over the place.

The dinobots' origins have changed so many times it's hard to keep track, even within the cartoon. The comics and the '84 cartoon don't necessarily have the same continuity.
I don't know if I am doing this right, but I think the name should be changed to 'Algernon-Gordon Syndrome,' the name of the regression in the short story. It makes more sense, and Flowers for Algernon is already pretty obscure, so it shouldn't cause any confusion.
