Does this trope count if it was a misunderstanding rather than a prank? I'm thinking of a Frasier episode where Frasier and Niles find a skull in their old house and convince themselves a murder happened after they moved out. In the end, though, it was just a plastic skull they stole for a production of Hamlet. Nobody duped them, they just duped themselves.
