Is this for any instance of a cough to disguise a word (or to pretend to disguise a word)? For example, Evil Dead 3 where the main character coughs over part of a magical phrase to try and cover for the fact that he couldn't remember it all?
Watch out where you step, or we'll be afoot.
Does this trope count if the word between the coughs isn't a snark so to speak, but a detail they rather not say out loud?
For example, in Dumb and Dumber, Harry asks where Lloyd got some extra money from, and he answers that he sold some stuff to a blind kid - after Harry pressed for details, it turns out one of the items was Harry's dead parakeet Petey.
Lloyd: A few baseball cards, a sack of marbles... *cough* Petey. (Actually it's just one cough but the cough is very deliberate, and the cough might have been intended to cover up 'Petey' but Lloyd failed miserably in the timing)
Harry: P-Petey? You sold my dead bird to a blind kid?!
