There are cases when other carrion-eaters, not necessarily birds, follow (supposedly) doomed characters. Do they count? Off the cuff I recall the episode of "Maya the Honey Bee" where characters were followed by burying beetles and a Russian superstition that foxes follow dying people.

I was also going to comment on the recurrence of an animal triad in Old English literature (making this trope as old as the Middle Ages at least) – the hawk, crow and wolf usually if I recall – which appear before or after a large and bloody battle, waiting to collect from the carnage and carrion afterwards.
