Why not a samurai playing shogi with a shinigami?

Because both Shogi and Shinigamis are derived from chess and the western idea of the Grim Reaper. Added Alliterative Appeal doesn't really justify making the trope name more obscure.

No, what I meant was a story where a samurai played shogi with a shinigami. I did not suggest to rename the trope at all.

So, if I wanted to write a scene where someone were to play chess with Death, what would be a credible basis for such a legendary match?
