Does anyone know where the term "boss" for these characters originally came from?

There should be a trope for this. It's an RPG boss that:

- Is siginifacntly tougher than ordinary bosses (often the firt one will be That One Boss). - Has battle music that differs from ordinary battle or boss battle music, but which is shared with other Legendary Bosses, but usually not the Final Boss. - Is not itself the Final Boss.

Often these are plot critical, but not always, as the occasional one can be a Giant Space Flea from Nowhere. Some examples:

-Atma Weapon and The 3 Gods from Final Fantasy VI. -The Candelabrum(sp?) bosses from Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. -Masamune, and Azla/Black Tyranno from Chrono Trigger. -The "Smithy Gang" bosses from Super Mario RPG(Mack, Bowyer, etc.)

Inversions:

-FFVII's Jenova-type bosses (They were actually EASIER than ordinary bosses, in fact, they can be considered a cross between Climax Boss and Breather Boss).
