The problem is, the anime has 8 volumes worth of material to adapt, but still go for the R+V approach. I doubt any of the light novels involved a Mecha parody/tribute and an entire episode's worth of playing Jenga.
Believe me, I would understand the anime's situation better if they actually ran out of material and had to make stuff up on the fly (the Galaxy Angel approach).

The original author of the light novels is doing the series composition, so he must have approved the changes going through. Even then, change isn't a bad thing.
I felt that both of those descriptions were falling into the old trap of using "Distillation" to mean "good" when it's more to do with style than any sort of goodness (and even then, the oft-used claim of good = serious). For the record, I happen to like the anime's absurdity, and with the amount of genre awareness the characters have displayed since the beginning, it's not a bad thing.
Coupled with the fact that the light novels have not been translated, all we have to go on are two derivative works. To assume that the comedic one is automatically the worse of the two is...something that irks me a bit. So any further discussions of the matter can be had here, but I feel a reasonable need to object.
