I am surprised that some people assume that all animated movies are Disney. I grew up watching a lot of those. Most are Disney. Even back then, I could tell which ones are exceptions. Before starting, movies usually show a brief animated sequence of the company logo. We gotta check whether the movie has the Disney logo, the Disney castle, and the arc tracing behind them. I first noticed this trope while reading "Awakening the Heroes Within" by Carol S. Pearson. At one point, thier is a description of the origional [The Land Before Time] movie. It refered to it as a "Disney" movie. However the movie was actually done by Universal. I loved watching the movie and the numerous sequals as a kid. It is probaly my favorite example of a non-Disney animated movie.

While I am in a nostalgic mood, I would like to mention another influincial source of TV entertainment. When I was little, I also watched a lot of the kid shows on PBS. Those shows are distint for haveing educational material wraped in an entertaing package. Depending on the show, the material could be about solcial skills, literacy, science etc. Maybe any kind of educational kids show can be mistaken for a product of PBS. My Little Pony Friendship is Magic could fall prey to this. The social lessons in the series is rather typical for a PBS kid show. However in America, it is brodcast by The Hub. It does have strong merchandising goal behind it. However there are merchandising for Sesemee Street and Barney, which are PBS. I loved watching those two shows when I was really little. My Little Pony may be too overtly feminine for PBS. PBS kid shows are pretty good at maintaining gender neutral styles.
