"During the Second World War, American soldiers came across railroad stations with a large sign stating simply, "HALT," and mistook this for the name of the town. In reality, "halt" in German means "stop," and the signs were put there so that people would not attempt to trespass."

This sounds completely implausible. "Halt" also means "stop" in English, and is particularly used in military contexts. Wouldn't American soldiers have assumed that a sign reading "Halt" was just a version of a stop sign?
