The things Ken sees in the real world influence what he thinks patriarchy is: He sees male construction workers, businessmen dismissing a female employee, and imitates the dismissing pose they do, he sees police officers riding horses, and when he goes up the escalator at Century City there’s a large screen that shows, if I remember correctly, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and a man riding a horse (or a horse rearing back.) These are the things that he thinks patriarchy is about, he’s like a sponge, he doesn’t actually know the nuances, so he assumes that what Century City and his surroundings contain must be elements of patriarchy. Later he goes to the school library and gets books on men ruling the world, patriarchy, and horses. The horses don’t come out of nowhere, and there’s a brief sequence where images of businessmen and other things he saw, including horses. If he had seen, for example, dolphins, dolphins would’ve been a major part of his Kendom. It’s just a reflection of what he saw in the real world, and he goes back to Barbieland to tell the other Kens what he saw, which includes horses, because he SAW horses featured prominently.
