> The ending of Mulholland Dr. leaves you flabbergasted.
. . . how? Details, people!!
Doesn't feel to me that Don't Look Up has a Gainax Ending at all, and the description is misleading. The ending is quite simple - human civilization on Earth is over with humans presumably extinct, while a sleeper ship with the last surviving humans aboard travels to a _different_ planet with life (not Earth)... where they are implied to be the "last living humans" for about the next ten minutes, due to being 1) idiots, 2) completely unprepared (they don't even have clothes!). It's all keeping perfectly well with the themes of the whole movie and even foreshadowed throughout the movie, showing the general corruption and incompetence that leads to both Earth's destruction and the behaviour of those survivors on the alien planet. Just a bunch of arrogant idiots without their life support. I'd argue even the "Brontorocs" are part of that general theme - not just a joke about some predictive algorithm discovering an alien life form and predicting it will kill them and it actually happening, but rather the arrogance of just accepting that silly prediction and adapting it to fit reality.
