I wonder if the formula "innocent person meets caged sentient being, develops empathy and decides to help it break free from stiff suited humans with the help of a ragtag bunch of misfits" shouldn't be a full fledged trope at this point? at this point there is a ton of media products using it, from E.T. to Free Willy, to the growing list of people claiming that (unlikely) Del Toro copied them.
