That a non-spectacular failure would strand them in the open doesn't necessarily result in "an expectation of death", either, given how they've gotten from Houston to Georgia (not exactly a stroll down to the corner convenience mart) before Ford's group shows up in the series.
I also question the last part of the entry about him bragging about his intelligence, though I'm not removing it for now. That a person is smart doesn't necessarily mean they know everything, especially if they consider it unimportant, which "how cars run" usually qualifies as for non-gearheads.
