Is Bakugo really Midoriya's The Not-Love Interest or is this someone putting their Shipping Goggles and shoehorning the example? I mean, we all know Shounen animanga run on the whole "exaggerated male friendship" thing where these characters are deeply involved with one another but never on a romantic level.

Here's the example I'm talking about:

  • The Not-Love Interest: For Midoriya. Bakugo is one of Midoriya's primary motivators and sources of inspiration, and saving or helping him has been Midoriya's primary motivation in four arcs, note  as well as the reason behind their second fight. Midoriya even reacts with goofy smiles when Bakugo praises him after their second fight and worries about him during the Joint Training Arc and both refer to each other by childish nicknames. Insulting Bakugo to Midoriya's face is a good way to make Midoriya fly off the handle, and due to Midoriya's Psychoactive Powers is extremely dangerous. Finally, it comes to the moment in the Final Arc where OFA in Shigaraki's body taunts him and explains his reasoning going after Bakugou: not because he is strong or because he sees him as a treat. But because he considers Bakugou the closest person to Deku. After seeing Deku's reaction to Bakugou's lifeless body, he mockingly questions if Deku *loves* the present he made for him.

I agree that Bakugo's role isn't really comparable to that of a love interest, since strong male friendships are a staple of shonen.

The idea behind the trope is that under any other circumstance, the character fulfills all of the usual trappings of being a Love Interest without actually being one. The fandom often jokes that Bakugo is more of a heroine than Uraraka, usually because he is often put into situations usually reserved for heroine type characters.

I'd say it fits.

Strong male friendships are indeed a staple of Shounen. I don't care for fandom jokes when troping things that happen in fiction. Fandoms that aren't familiar with the site's definition of certain tropes may think these fit their fav characters/specific situations, but if we were to apply the same logic here, it'd be misuse/shoehorn.

"the character fulfills all of the usual trappings of being a Love Interest without actually being one." Except Bakugo doesn't fulfill it, IMO. This can be said for many Shounen male friendships (that can come across as hoyay-ish to others unfamiliar with the genre), so why MHA is the one that fits the trope but not the rest?

In Chapter 293, Bakugo calls himself "Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight". I interpret that as, his hero name is the whole thing. Otherwise, there'd probably be a comma or colon before the "Dynamight", and Iida wouldn't call it "a mouthful" since Dynamight isn't a particularly long hero name.

But this page, and lots of others, thing that his name is just Dynamight, and that "Great Explosion Murder God" is just the title (similar to Froppy calling herself "The rainy season hero").

I want to edit this page so he's referred to by his full hero name, but first, I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

I mean. There's no colon or comma in between Amazing and Spider-Man. I'd just consider it just The Adjectival Superhero unless there's further evidence.

Alright. I've also found out that apparently, the translator interpreted it as "Dynamight, the Great Explosion Murder God", which is extra evidence for that side, so I'll keep it that way for now.

I still think that "Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight" is a funnier name, though.

No is denying it isn't funny; it's just not practical to write it out.

And, Chapter 294 has Ida say the whole thing, which I think confirms that he's not just "Dynamight". I knew it!

One chapter does not confirm anything, please wait a few chapters to avoid Speculative Troping.

I mean, it kinda does? Iida doesn't like the name, but he says the whole thing anyway. How else are you supposed to interpret that?

Same way we did before? That it's just The Adjectival Superhero except "The Adjectival Descriptive Qualified Comparative Superhero"?

Titles can be mouthfuls without being someone's proper name.

That said, given his idea of "Lord Explosion Murder" as explicitly his hero name before, I wouldn't be surprised if that whole thing is his name. I just don't think it's confirmed.

Well, like I said, Chapter 294 has Ida say the whole thing, even though just "Dynamight" would have worked in that context. If Ida thinks "Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight" is a mouthful, then he would go for the shorter version if he could. But he didn't, which indicates that you're not supposed to shorten it.
