If you know a little bit of math, it can be explained as follows: {1} is not the same set as {{1}}. The first is the set of the number 1. The second is the set of the set consisting of only the number 1. The elements of the first set are numbers while the elements of the second set are sets.

Sets are a special type of classes. A class can contain itself, but a set can not. The example in the note is incorrect- a box containing an apple and a box is not a set containing itself because the interior box is not the same object as the exterior box. Why not? Because the exterior box contains an apple and a box while the interior box does not.
