Maybe it\\\'s just because I bought the entire series at about the same time Embers reached its stride of \\\"Zuko as the protagonist\\\", but I can\\\'t help comparing Aang and Zuko to the {{Deuteragonist}}s of GarthEnnis\\\' TheBoys; Hughie Campbell and Billy Butcher. They\\\'re two members of a CIA-sponsored team that monitors, polices and occasionally terminates corrupt superhumans.

\\\"Wee\\\" Hughie is pretty much Aang as a Scottish conspiracy theorist. He\\\'s kind, brave, determined, and even quite clever and insightful in his own way. He\\\'s also a naive, shortsighted idiot. Though he is key to cracking several investigations, two moments he\\\'s known for are \\\"parking a tiger\\\" on the floor of a suspect\\\'s home(because he couldn\\\'t work the security system said suspect had put on his bathroom) and greeting Butcher at the door of his apartment with blood in his beard because he didn\\\'t realize his girlfriend was menstruating.

Butcher is... essentially MichaelCaine as the star of his own GuyRitchie film. He\\\'s cool, calm, collected, and capable of single-handedly beating the crap out of anyone save Superman, Doomsday, Wonder Woman or Thor. He\\\'s also a vengeance-crazed BloodKnight who loves violence about as much as hardcore perverts like Miroku or Happosai love sex. Though he is key to saving the United States from a coup by sociopathic superhumans, he also comes within seconds of committing genocide.

But in the end, Hughie wins out and stops him, not by beating him up, but by being a decent human being.

->\\\'\\\'...Ennis seems genuinely divided on the subject. On the one hand, he is obsessed with machismo, and of how manly men interact with each other. On the other hand, he also views machismo as ultimately childish, and needing to give way to a less violent maturity that can only be won through the love of wife and family. The places where machismo operates may be the places where he finds stories, but he also considers those who remain there too long as immature. \\\'\\\'
