The Idiot Ball trope should be changed or eliminated because That whole point is hotly discussed still. My impression was that The Aunt told them basically that Seita and Setsuko had better start pulling their weight by helping around the house or Getting a job with the Fire Dept, avery Hazardous job at that because they were draining resources from her family. You forgot upon arriving The Aunt forced Seita to sell what possions they had outside what they were wearing and the tin box so they could buy Rice and cooking gear with most of the rice going to the Aunts family. The aunt could have shared cooking gear with Seita and Setsuko and arrangeg some sort of working around the house agreement upon arrival. The Aunt clearly Drained what resources the kids had and then kicked them out,discouraging them from coming back. So going back was not an option
