This state had existed as early as the advent of the crossbow. What the gun provided was an effective ranged armor penetration solution against increasingly common half or three quarters munitions plate. Firearms were far more expensive than crossbows, and we don\'t see armies sizes increasing significantly until the 1660s, or at all until the 1550s, while field firearms were being significantly used starting around 1410.

It\'s also a mistake to compare firearms with longbows - comparing them directly to bows is better. There were elite units wielding firearms that were just as effective in their own way as elite bowmen - Jannisaries and Imperial sharpshooters (sort of proto-Jagers) being the two most obvious.
