They had options but there was no arc. The last shot was purposefully vague so that other filmmakers could do whatever they want. As it stands, it is simply a shot of Bruce smiling as he turns into the Hulk. If we take that scene and apply it to the Avengers, it shows that he has mastered his anger in a more productive way which we saw in the climax.

An abandoned arc might be if there was a subplot in the Hulk\\\'s last movie that showed him being abducted by aliens, only for him to show up in the Avengers without explanation.
