to:
* CharacterAlignment: Big time {{YMMV}}, and the characters are more like \\\"real\\\" people in that they haven\\\'t somehow made a career of following a specific alignment in everything they do, or any impulse they have, but the best available approximation is roughly:
** Ranma: In-between ChaoticGood and NeutralGood in his better moments, and generally no worse than ChaoticNeutral. He doesn\\\'t seem to have any respect for authority (although that\\\'s partially because all of the authority figures in the series are very unreasonable) and usually just wants to live and let live while also being very compassionate, and repeatedly willing to help out almost anybody in need at the drop of a hat. If things get too hot for him though, he will quickly try to back out, and he can be quite manipulative, malicious, and petty at times.
** Akane: Aspires to be {{Neutral|Good}} or even LawfulGood, and is arguably one of the most compassionate, helpful, idealistic, heroic, and hardworking characters in the series; but while she \\\'\\\'usually\\\'\\\' manages to stay on that side of the spectrum, she recurrently falls closer to ChaoticNeutral, due to her paranoid violent lashout treatment of Ranma.
** Genma: In-between ChaoticNeutral and NeutralEvil. Doesn\\\'t really seem to \\\'\\\'mean\\\'\\\' to be evil, but is so selfish, self-centered, impulsive, short-sighted, irresponsible and lazy that he can do horrible things to his friends and family.
** Nodoka: LawfulGood with a \\\'\\\'\\\'strong\\\'\\\'\\\' dash of LawfulStupid. She is extraordinarily polite, but she also a traditionalist to the core and [[HonorBeforeReason very much bound by her twisted sense of honor]]. Even though she does give Ranma a break for the curse, she is still serious about making him commit {{Seppuku}} if she ever judges him to be unmanly, an adjective which she does not even seem sure of how to define. (Although going by her views in the manga, Her ideas about manliness are also pretty subject.) She will hate doing it, she dreams constant [[NightmareFuel nightmares]] about having to do it, and she might accept opportunities for him that she doesn\\\'t have to do it on whatever technicality (being a cross-dresser is probably ok if you\\\'re being intimate with Akane... I think), but she will do it.
** Nabiki: In the manga, firmly NeutralEvil, with greater tendencies for ChaoticEvil than LawfulEvil: There are no depths to which she will not stoop or trusts she\\\'ll hesitate to betray in getting whatever petty thing she\\\'s after, be it material goods or simple amusement, and she displays a complete ambivalence regarding her approach inside or outside of the system. The anime\\\'s portrayal of her is much softer, probably TrueNeutral, or at worst in-between the two alignments.
** Kasumi: Unambiguously and thoroughly NeutralGood, or possibly LawfulGood: Mostly wants everyone to be peaceful and happy. Though, before she became totally [[{{Flanderization}} flanderized]], she would try to do nice things that failed to consider other character\\\'s tendencies to make things worse. Also prior to flanderization she did have a life outside of the Tendo house since she is shown to go on trips with friends.
** Soun: ChaoticGood, but very inefficiently so. Kind to children, charitable to strangers, overly compassionate (or rather, emotional in general), fiercely overprotective of his daughters, and very loyal to his dead wife. Some would argue more ChaoticNeutral, given how irrational, thoughtless, or even obsessive he can be. After he thought that Akane been turned into a duck by Mousse, he decides that the most pressing concern was that nobody would want to marry and take care of her, so he pressures Ranma into \\\"taking responsibility\\\"... [[CrowningMomentOfFunny by almost marrying a real duck]]. When the Jusenkyo guide sent the Tendos a casket of \\\"spring of drowned man\\\", Soun also kept it as leverage to convince Akane to marry Ranma.
** Happosai: ChaoticEvil: Generally in a [[PokeThePoodle small-time]] way, and {{played for laughs}} so often it is very hard to take him seriously, but in his worst moments he\\\'s been quite willing to murder or torture those weaker then he is. In one story trying to think of good deeds [[CrowningMomentOfFunny caused him to blow a mental fuse]], but he eventually managed to make a fireworks display for two small children; and generally at least tries to be kind to them, such as by lending them toys, or making the sickly Hinako healthy again. Of course, he also sees nothing strange with [[CrowningMomentOfFunny allowing them to think that he is Santa Claus]], or making them into accomplices on his panty raids either... He is nicer in the anime, as, among other things, he here cares for and tries to reform his ways for a kindergarten teacher he meets and becomes a notorious thief to care for a woman who appears to be very frail and sickly. He can here be seen more as ChaoticNeutral.
** Shampoo: Amoral enough to qualify as unapologetic NeutralEvil in the manga, even cutting her slack for village law adherence. She\\\'s recurrently switching between sadistic manipulation and barbarian ruthlessness. However, she is generally also quite upbeat and cuddly, and although there have been quite a few moments when she\\\'s been willing to casually cut down anyone in her path if expedient, or indiscriminately severely bully annoyances for years, she will generally shrug and do something else if it turns inconvenient. Changed to be more ChaoticNeutral in the anime, though it\\\'s arguable if she fluctuates between the two alignments or fully pulls herself into ChaoticNeutral.
** Cologne: In practice outwardly generally TrueNeutral on average. She cursed her own great-granddaughter to turn into a cat as punishment for not killing Ranma while stating that this was what the law of their tribe demanded for \\\"coming home in defeat\\\", tends to find her manipulative antics amusing, trapped Ranma as a girl until he/she would marry Shampoo, has admitted that if she found a love potion she would use it on Ranma, held Akane as a (not particularly serious) hostage, and similar. However, she is also recurrently helpful for training, or advise, especially in crisis situations (such as teaching Ranma the Hiryu Shoten Ha after Happosai turned him too weak to marry Shampoo), helped to set up a plan when Saffron threatened the Jusenkyo springs, and seems to get along well with her fellow food vendors. Like many of these characters, alignment differs between the [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation anime]] and manga. Stories existing in both media depict her more amiably in the anime version, but mid-to-late manga stories that were not animated also displayed her cheerfully chaotic and helpful nature.
** Mousse: NeutralEvil at the start of the series. Seems much more TrueNeutral at the end, as he did save Ranma from Herb, and never seemed to outright attempt to kill him afterwards. Furthermore, an arc was devoted to him learning to stop cheating during fights, he is shown to have bad conscience for much lesser things than he did at the start (contrast throwing dangerous weaponry that could have hurt Kasumi or other bystanders in his earliest stories, with feeling very bad about accidentally running over the youthened Ranma & Ryoga near the end) and, most dramatically of all, he gave up his one chance to have Shampoo love him in order to free her from slavery. Although to a lesser degree than Kuno (and [[YourMileageMayVary Happosai]]), [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain he also usually seemed to be too much of a silly idiot to be considered truly evil]]. The exception being the Taro arc, wherein he feigned to help in order to get a chance to assassinate Ranma.
** Taro: Generally unapologetic NeutralEvil, but with occasional ChaoticGood spots. He doesn\\\'t mind offhandedly helping beautiful young women in distress, but apparently mostly due to being interested in picking them up (he turned too embarrassed when asked about his silly name though).
** Tatewaki: Tough call. Probably somewhere in-between LawfulStupid and ChaoticStupid. He\\\'s deluded to the point that there is very little correlation between his behaviour and view of himself, making some people think that he should simply get some sort of \\\"insanity\\\" alignment and be excluded any further. Kuno himself thinks that he is a LawfulGood chivalrous samurai, which at least could get somewhere with the right guidance. Others think that he\\\'s a very bungling and half-witted sort of LawfulEvil, or a very blindsided and self-serving LawfulNeutral or TrueNeutral. When given the opportunity to establish himself as a figure of authority in the anime, he [[DrunkWithPower becomes tyrannical and zealous]] \\\'\\\'very\\\'\\\' quickly.
** Principal Kuno: ChaoticNeutral: Not truly evil, and explicitly says that he stirs up the students and throws the school into chaos with his wild schemes [[JerkAss purely because he finds it fun]]. Of course, like all the Kuno\\\'s he is [[CloudCuckooLander rampantly]] [[ChaoticStupid insane]], possibly even more so than his children. Takahashi even mentioned this as the reason for never introducing the mother of the family, as she couldn\\\'t come up with something fitting that would top the rest of them.
** Kodachi: Probably in-between ChaoticStupid given her unpredictability and rampant insanity, and NeutralEvil given her mixture of whimsical and calculated ruthlessness: Kodachi is almost completely dishonourable, and thinks nothing of using poisons, ambushes, or explosives on anyone around her. However, she acts out only in accordance to achieve her goals and is otherwise usually indifferent to others, beyond viewing regular people as \\\"bugs\\\". She is also CloudCuckooLander level deluded and insane, so arguably probably less genuinely evil than the much saner, calculated, and harmonic Nabiki and Shampoo. In the anime she is apparently kinder; extensively helped the Tendos out when they encountered serious financial difficulties, very much misses her father, and appreciates her brother more. Here probably more ChaoticNeutral.
** Sasuke: LawfulNeutral: Truly doesn\\\'t have any grudge against Ranma or Akane, but is honor-bound to obey the Kunos and he will do anything and everything they demand.
** Ryoga: Roughly ChaoticNeutral near the beginning of the series, but becomes more unambiguously ChaoticGood-NeutralGood-ish after CharacterDevelopment. [[BaseBreaker See the links for the long version]]. It is up to speculation whether he started out that way, but was provoked to extremes, and then climbed through it back to where he started, or if he evolved due to new experiences and relationships.
** Ukyo: Manga: ChaoticNeutral on average, but may be more ChaoticGood towards Ranma himself. Likely averages as mild ChaoticGood in the anime, where her manga-self\\\'s willingness to suggest killing Hinako on suspicion of her trying to seduce Ranma or joing in attack Nabiki are removed, and she has stories like \\\"The Great Girly-Girl Gambit\\\", where she ends up regretting the problems she\\\'s caused by trying to get Ranma to notice her and dialing things back down to the way they were.
** Hinako: ChaoticGood: She thinks of herself as LawfulGood, but really she\\\'s far too erratic and scatterbrained to be Lawful anything. Her bizarre ideas about enforcing \\\"good\\\", and her willingness to jump the gun on declaring somebody a delinquent, may knock her into StupidGood territory.
** Tofu: Apparently NeutralGood or possibly LawfulGood in general, but not seen much. He tried to help Ranma and Akane get off to a better footing... by hitting a pressure point on Ranma\\\'s back that would cause his legs to go out in several minutes and leave him dependent on Akane\\\'s good graces to get home. [[UnfortunateImplications There\\\'s also that weird fixation on Kasumi which seems to have started when the girl was about \\\'\\\'12\\\'\\\' or so...]]
** Gosunkugi: Probably TrueNeutral. [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain Despite his creepy antics, he is too clumsy to be really dangerous]], but given that he sometimes tries to cast nonexistent curses on Ranma, those who take him too seriously might disagree. After all, there\\\'s quite a lot of other curses in the series (Jusenkyo, Maomolin attempting to trap Shampoo as a cat permanently, cursed wallscrolls that killed people if their seal was removed, a swimsuit that attached to women and drowned them), so what if those curses he used actually \\\'\\\'worked\\\'\\\'? However, he doesn\\\'t really bother anybody other than Ranma, beyond taking fully clothed photos of girls that he likes (which, unlike Nabiki, he doesn\\\'t sell to anybody). When given access to \\\'\\\'real\\\'\\\' magic through the control paper dolls, he didn\\\'t use them for anything worse than making Ranma trip to make him embarrassed, so apparently not particularly vicious for anything that could cause actual harm; and as such his usual antics could easily be seen as mostly insincere stress relief the way most others use fighting video games. He also more or less makes up with Ranma during the \\\"warsuit\\\" arc.
** Akari: NeutralGood: Doesn\\\'t really want to hurt anyone, and tries her hardest to be patient and understanding with Ryoga. But not afraid to have Katsunishiki wander around and beat up random guys to find the man of her dreams either.
** Konatsu: Likely NeutralGood or possibly very sympathetic TrueNeutral. He generally doesn\\\'t want to hurt anyone, but he has been broken into being obedient, so he will follow the orders of first his step-family and then Ukyo without more than token complaints. He has also tried to poison his step-family at least once in the manga and is implied to have tried it several times in the past, but he generally only uses paralysis poisons, and they had tortured him for years with no seeming ways to escape.
** Ryu Kumon: TrueNeutral. His word is his bond, and he will rescue any DamselInDistress that he comes across, but is also somewhat of a ruthless chauvinistic JerkAss. He couldn\\\'t force himself to use torture for information though; and did turn nicer due to his interactions with Nodoka.
** Herb and Saffron: Apparently LawfulEvil or possibly NeutralEvil
