For example, Ted Kaczynski is often used as a shortcut for \\\"crazy, dangerous loner\\\". If you are compared to him, it is almost guaranteed not to be a compliment. Yet, if you read the Unibomber Manifesto, he actually makes quite a bit of sense in his \\\'\\\'analysis\\\'\\\' of how technology can isolate people and fracture society. There\\\'s no question that his solution was full-bore nutjob, but it is a little disconcerting to read what is supposed to be the ramblings of a lunatic and find yourself nodding in agreement.

This happens in politics, as well, especially at election times. Political attack ads can easily backfire if you aren\\\'t targeting the right demographic.
