* \'\'\'UsefulNotes/{{Steam}} Greenlight\'\'\' and its successor, \'\'\'Steam Direct\'\'\', are classic examples of a good idea ruined by SturgeonsLaw. The idea for Greenlight was that indie developers could propose games that they have been developing to the Steam playerbase to determine what games they would like Valve to publish, with only the most in-demand quality games getting the green light, so to speak, to be sold through Steam. In practice, however, there was so little oversight (if any \'\'at all\'\') that the indie marketplace on Steam was quickly flooded with the worst {{Shovelware}} UsefulNotes/{{Shovelware}} ever released, with quality games drowned out in a sea of complete and utter crap, completely failing in its stated intent to curtail the flow of bad games. Greenlight would eventually be shut down in late 2017 and replaced with Steam Direct, which was created to ostensibly help streamline the publication of indie games onto Steam. Sadly, the streamlining amounted to little more than paying Valve $100 to publish the game, with very little done to vet the games or the publishers beforehand: when it came to curtailing the flow of shit, Direct did \'\'\'\'\'[[EpicFail WORSE]]\'\'\'\'\' \'\'\'\'\'worse\'\'\'\'\' than Greenlight! The sheer amount of utter tripe released on Steam as a result of Greenlight and Direct have provided no shortage of material for [[WebVideo/{{Jimquisition}} Jim Sterling]].
