That's factually incorrect to say that Calvina takes over for Touya while he's gone. The opposite is true: Touya's plotline fades into the background between him discovering the drive to become a pilot, and him actually being captured. It's not until Touya gets some answers from that and kidnaps the princess in his escape, that he becomes an ''active participant'' in the plot again, rather than a MagGuffin the villains are after.
