As for keeping it right under the very noses, the 'secret' in question was not really addressed by any character aside from Robert Baratheon. Even then, it remained obscure, and just served to satisfy the viewers rather than convey it as an act of Magnificent Bastardry.

I don't think that counts as Magnificent Bastardry. Keeping secrets does not mean he has savvy or that he has a goal, it would take a lot more than that to be an MB.

Just to be clear, this is the same Ned Stark that got outwitted by the Lannisters and Littlefinger, right? No savvy there. It takes a lot more to be an MB than keeping a secret.
