The definition of the trope here is a bit muddled. It explicitly refers to Tolkien, but classifies the trope as the \'\'intent\'\' of the author making his work a certain way or declaring that the reader should make up a theme. Tolkien\'s \'\'applicability\'\', however, is just a \'\'quality\'\' of a work, that in that it is or happens to be applicable/comparable to many things or issues.
