because it\'s not treated as being terribly \'\'difficult in itself\'\'; it\'s the level of precision needed that\'s difficult, since the stars are the only way a Scout has of knowing where they are in time when they\'ve gone through a new gate, and existing in two places at the same time, even for a fraction of a second, called \"shadowing yourself\", is paradox and fatal.

Using the stars to figure that you\'re in <x year> may not be good enough. For a scout who\'s gone through as many gates, to as many place/times as Kit, it may be necessary to know down to the day to avoid shadowing themselves. And since Kit is the is generally the spokesman character when plotting the stars comes up, the reader hears more about his attitude than anyone else\'s.
