Trans people generally consider themselves to always have been their gender, but either not realised it, or didn't have it recognised by others. So using their current/future pronouns retroactively is what's most appropriate.

It\'s like with gay people who\'ve had relationships with men/women of the opposite sex. It\'s not as if they \"used\" to be straight. They were gay all along but either didn\'t realise it or were hiding it for whatever reason.
