As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
closed Ping in TLP
We should be able to ping users in TLP. A lot of commenters need to have the problems with their suggestion pointed out to them, but frequently they don't return to see responses to them on their own.
closed Show status of queries in Queries screen
Right now, when you look at your My Queries list from your profile, you can't see the status of your Bugs or Wishlist entries. It'd be very helpful for the list to be able to show the statuses so you can see what's still open, and to be able to filter them by status if possible.
NOTE: I'll remove this if someone else has asked for it.
Edited by Willbyrclosed See all of your own query replies
I would like the ability to not only see the queries one has created, but also see all one's query replies to other queries that have been made. I think it would be useful for personal record-keeping purposes. Maybe something similar to the new TLP activity page that was created.
Edited by themayorofsimpletonclosed Button to mark YKTS as answered
YKTS queries should have a "close" button or equivalent, open for the original poster, to mark them as having been answered.
(or better yet, the ability to mark a reply as the answer like on StackExchange, but this would be way harder to code)
closed Make it easy to find unread queries
I and others struggle to find old queries marked as unread (new replies) in my query list that has been growing over the years. I suggest unread threads/queries to bubble to the top of the list. Alternatively, there should be a sorting/filter option to bring them quickly into view.
closed Please add YouKnowThatShow to the header of AskTheTropers.
There are several YKTS queries a day, and it would help everyone involved if ATT had a reminder to go there for those questions.
closed Reformat trigger buttons on crowners
Right now, the "show/hide options" and "add new" buttons on crowners are just, well, plain text in boxes, and the former hangs down into the page numbering information at the bottom of the thread. They should be made to stand out more, similar to how they looked in the old version.
closed Get rid of the scrollbar when viewing a PM.
This is a years-old thing. (It's also a PM I wrote, before any of you jump on me for publicly displaying the contents of a PM.)◊ But if you're reading a really long PM, it would be nice to not have to read it in a tiny little scrollbox, if it was just displayed in full like how ATT queries and forum posts are displayed.

closed Standardized format for Creator pages
First of all, it seems like with a lot of creator pages, we're just copying IMDB, and not as well. If there's nothing specifically tropeworthy about an actor, I don't think we need a page that's just a list of their films and shows.
Second, there seems to be no system for listing roles. I've seen it by year (ascending and descending), alphabetized by work, alphabetized by character name (which gets confusing especially with characters who follow a surname-first naming system), and just not organized at all. We should decide on one and make it clear.
closed More clear spoiler formatting
While this may be buried because it isn't new content per se, I think it would be really nice if spoiler formatting told you what part of a work it's spoiling. While on most works assuming that you shouldn't click to see spoilers if you haven't finished it works just fine, for pages where completed works and ongoing adaptations are on the same page (especially Anime & Manga), it can cause problems for people who /thought/ they had finished it. Example for clarity: I have seen the MHA anime through season 6 (which, at the time of writing, means I'm caught up), so when scrolling the page I usually leave spoilers off from the sidebar. However, every so often I come across a spoiler for parts of the manga that haven't yet been adapted. While this is probably my own fault, I think adding a way to write on top of the whiteout would improve everyone's experience. In my example, this would be something like "season 4" or "unadapted manga" on each spoiler, so people like me would click on the spoiler for season 4, which we've seen, but no for the manga, which we haven't read.
closed Change the button label when making a new discussion page post / threading clarification
Discussion pages show exactly the same edit box whether you're starting a new discussion or replying to an existing one.
The post button is always "Post Reply", even if it's a new post and not a reply. As there's no confirmation above the edit box as to whether it's a new post or a reply, this can get really confusing and can easily lead to mistakes (I've just made a real mess of one thread today, hence this request).
Some of this might already be covered by other work-in-progress changes, but can we -
- Swap the "Post Reply" text for "Start New Discussion" (which currently only appears if there's no discussion page at all) if it's a new thread
- Add a "You are replying to this thread" / "You are starting a new thread" style note above the edit box, so it's clear which you've selected.
Thanks!

closed In-Editor suggestions and/or autocomplete
It would be nice if the editor had a suggestion/autocomplete dropdown selection box when writing about examples of a trope or work entries.
I understand that TVT uses little client-side programming so might not, ever, have such an advanced utility but I argue that it would be a highly useful one especially if it would work on a continuously updated dictionary/index. It would certainly hasten editing work and corrections (if markup formatting was part of suggestions/autocomplete).
Since I switched to editing in notepad++ it was very helpful to compile such a dictionary for it by scraping the index pages a while back, however, it is a difficult process because of the lack of pagination and alphabetical pre-sorting aids.
closed "Engineer" role for certain users
As discussed in the Hiring mods (now locked) and Appeal to the moderation threads in the forums, it would be a great relief to our hard-working moderators if certain users were entrusted with limited versions of the mod team's tools.
This would spread out the grunt work among a larger portion of the site's users, lightening the mods' hefty workload.
The following powers come to mind when it comes to things engineers could do:
- Editing locked pages
- Hooking crowners to forum threads
- Locking and unlocking forum threads and ATT queries.
- Clocking/unclocking forum threads.
- Moving pages to a different name while preserving their editing history.
- Managing video examples (accepting, rejecting, or deleting them)
Not every engineer would necessarily have all of these powers. And of course, such powers would only be granted to active, trustworthy, long-time users who have proven themselves to hold the wiki's best interests at heart. Abusing these privileges would lead to them being immediately revoked.
Edited by Zuxtronclosed Notifier that sends a link to an ATT thread instead of an edit?
Based off of this discussion here it seems like sending people links to ATT reports is going to become a standard part of the process. However, I know that me and other people get anxious when it comes to unscripted confrontation, and it's part of why I have trouble sending such links to people. My thought is that if there was some way to send people pre-written notifiers directing them to such threads, it would take a lot of the pressure off.
I don't know if this is possible coding-wise, however I believe it would help a lot to make the new rules easier for people to follow. So, if it is possible for this to be set up, I think it would be a good idea.
