As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openAdd "Unlaunched" trope as a common edit reason
The rogue/stealth edit reason has been added lately, but when I was cleaning up links from a trope that was unlaunched for unadressed issues (The unlaunched trope's draft), I might think it needs a companion piece or maybe even merge as "Unlaunched" when it comes to unaddressed issues other then being rogue or stealth launched.
workingAdd a completely random page button to the header.
The Random Trope and Random Media buttons on the top of the screen will only ever send you to pages with a media namespace, or the "Main" namespace. It will never send you to a subpage like Nightmare Fuel or a trope that has individual pages for mediums. Sometimes I like to hit the random buttons to see if I can find a page without an image and correct it. The thing is, most of the pages that are lacking images/could use improvements are the subpages that the random buttons won't send me to. I understand that I could just click the namespace links on the page I arrive on, but this would speed things up a bit.
openFurther forum improvements
Just throwing a suggestion for future reference. The fixed forum search is good, but could have improved uses:
- Filter to search by forum title only and remove duplicate results (different posts from the same thread), letting users find specific threads, with results giving the opening post.
- Filter to search by posts only, excludes matching with a thread title, just brings up posts where the query is present.
Also, since forum search uses posts text as previews, it may be more helpful to just show the post's user and/or date for visibility, especially since sorting by date is an option by there's no indication which date the posts are posted.
closed Improve forum search: searching for multiple words or phrases
Searching the text of forum posts is a cool idea, but at this moment you can only search for single words. That is, if you try doing a search for "Tom Cruise", it will find all the posts which say "Tom" AND all the posts which say "Cruise"; there's no way to search for posts where both words appear at once, or for the entire phrase.
At this moment it greatly limits the usefulness of the search feature, and if fixed, it would make it a godsend.
I'm not sure if it's already in the plans — I haven't seen it discussed anywhere.
closed Bring back Search Forum Titles
Because the current forum search is completely broken if you're looking for a title that's also a common word in posts themselves.
The 2012 French Presidential Election thread is impossible to find!
workingDirect links to videos
Currently it's impossible to point to a specific video on this site. Instead you would have to describe it like this: open the video from work X on trope page Y.
Would be great if each video had a link that everyone could open from the forums. E.g. in the same way you can pop up images on tropedia◊.
Edited by eroockworkingSummary of account activity
Some key metrics like overall edits and word count, the topics youāve contributed the most in absolute and relative terms to. That sort of stuff.
open"Click to see context" also for new entries
We now have a feature to see where an edit to a lower-hierarchy entry belongs via the "Click to see context" button. However, this feature does not work for new entries where it would be equally important to see the context.
openImproved Video Example Features
I would like to see some features added to Video Examples, including: -Subtitles for deaf or hard-of-hearing tropers. -Spoiler Blur/Mute for Video Examples that are spoilers or graphically violent (this means Video Examples won't get rejected for these two reasons), and the blur/mute can be removed either by double-clicking on the video or by signing into TV tropes and turning on "show spoilers", similar to how spoilers in the Trope texts are hidden behind a white-out mark. -The ability to create a Video Examples page for a trope that doesn't currently have one, as opposed to uploading the Video Example for another trope and using the new trope as a secondary trope. -The ability to suggest edits to a Video Example description, sources, and secondary tropes for a Video Example uploaded by someone else.
openMake a TLP draft have its launch button disabled for 7 days before it's launched or nuked
In my opinion, 3 days is too short for a TLP draft to be launched. In some cases, some tropers insist on launching it once the 3 day limitation is lifted without addressing lingering issues. For me, a TLP draft needs 7 days to cook.
Edited by alnair20aug93closed Please restore the Search Function.
For the past couple of days, something seems to have changed about the Search Algorithm. Whether it's the Old or New Search, it's suddenly become much less intuitive. Whatever had been done to "upgrade" the Search Engine, please undo it.
Edited by SAMASworkingAdd image uploader button to TLP
Since it's missing one.
A better way could be just use the wiki editor for TLP, which would make draft editing on a separate page, have the preview button, and include the visual editor, but for now just adding image uploading would be easier.
openAdd option to edits reasons
Iām wondering if we can add an option in the edit reasons for updating a link, or some better phrased version of that e.g like when a page is redirected and the links need to be updated to reflect that I.e Ultimate X Men was disambiguated and is now Ultimate X-Men (2001) and Ultimate X-Men (2024). This would make cleanups a lot easier.
workingFix how settings are stored
As is, the settings resets whenever the cookies expires (for literally no reason), and it becomes real bothersome to have to reconfigure everything after that, specially because some settings are hidden inside the account settings. So, idea: attach the settings to the account, so when you log in, it remembers the settings as they were and automatically applies that.
closed Add "Rogue/Stealth launch" and "Unilateral edit" as common edit reasons.
Exactly what it says. So that it would be easier in case of dewicking.
openAdd numbers next to the Wicks on Related Pages
In case it gets handy for checking large wick counts on pages whenever I use the randomizer method.
openCustom Title validation
How to Make a Custom Title states that requesting a change for Custom Display should only be done to alter capitalization or punctuation. If a Custom Display has letters not present in the wikiword, it's invalid.
Yet, people use it to effectively rename pages anyway. And quite often, these slip through moderators and someone has to submit a title again to make it proper.
Since it requires simply checking if all letters in the title request match the letters in the wikiword, why can't the request form do that automatically and error if there's a discrepancy?
The main exception is altering numbers or hiding a Retronym number, so I'm a bit unsure what can be done with those, other than adding a pop-up: "Warning: The requested title does not match the WikiWord. Please ensure this discrepancy follows How to Make a Custom Title or ask in this thread" and another button if those are detected to double-confirm.
This should reduce the load on moderators who from what I hear have to check hundreds of title requests and tend to make mistakes.
Also as far as I'm aware there's no "reset title" button for mods, meaning they or someone else have to fill in the request form again to clear the invalid title, and even if the new title matches the default one it's still treated as customized.
workingAttach Video Names to PM Rejection Titles
Currently, every video rejection PM just has the title of "Video Submission Rejected". I wonder if it would be possible to make it so that the title of video (or the trope it's attached to) is in the title. I have to reject many, often times from the same troper, and if they respond to me it can be confusing as to which one they're addressing.
openBring "Is This An Example" out of the forums
Is This An Example is a forum thread that seems to function a lot like Ask The Tropers and the Trope Finder, but since everything gets lumped into a single thread, a lot of them get missed, not to mention that users have to slog through the forums to get there instead of using the sidebar. If it was brought out of the forums and turned into another element of the "Queries" set, that would not only make it easier to access, but making each topic its own thread would make accessing individual topics easier. The only real restriction could be that, instead of a custom title, you would have to input the trope and media (or "none" for the latter, if it's something you cooked up out of wholecloth) you're referencing.

Eight years ago, ~SatoshiBakura made a wish for different site colors, which ~kory closed last year, saying we should make a second thread to vote on color changes. Since I'm running a custom stylesheet, I experimented with some colors and I found some that looked good. (All strings preceded by "#" are HTML hex color codes.)
Note: Most of what I wrote is similar to what Satoshi wrote, with some minor fixes for color specifications and stuff like that. I know TV Tropes was redesigned in 2018, so if you see stuff no longer relevant, point it out to me and I'll delete it.
Corollary: I did look at some old 2016/17-era pages on the Wayback Machine, so these colors shouldn't be too screwed up. Also, note that I will post screenshots to demonstrate what I am thinking once more people have seen this post.
Font change
Font: Open Sans (the font I currently run on my userstyle). I'm biased, though. I'll run a comparison and show the screenshots in a bit.Normal Pages
Grey headers: Make them blue (either #004aab, #00204a, or #00306f).As Satoshi said, the primary color of the site is (or used to be) blue.
Negative space: Make it light blue (either #00484d or #00124d).
Footers: Same color as the grey headers (either #004aab, #00204a, or #00306f).
YMMV Pages:
Top header: Make it dark blue (same color as the new headers). Alternatively, make it orange (#ab5f00) again.Grey header: Make it dark blue or orange (#ab5f00). The gray button (formerly green) is OK, I think.
Space around text: Not sure what Satoshi meant by this in 2016.
Negative space: Make it dark grey or light orange (#ff710087)?
Footer: Same color as top header.
Links: Should be orange (#ab5f00 or #ba4500?) when highlighted. (Alternatively, you could make them all orange, but...)
Subpage tabs: The proposal in 2016 was to "make the outlines orange and the words dark blue." I believe that meant the fill for the subpage buttons should be orange and the words dark blue, so, say, #ffb938 for the buttons and #00008d for the words? Alternatively, if we wanted the blue aesthetic, we could do dark blue for the buttons and orange for the wording.
Sugar Wiki:
Top header: In 2016, the proposal would have made the top header blue-green and the "random" button yellow. However, given that the appearance of the website has been updated, something like this might work (#990053 for the header bars). We don't need to worry about the "random" button.Bluish green headers: Not applicable to the 2018-era design.
Negative space: Make it lighter pink.
Links: Should be pink when highlighted. (Alternatively, you can make them all pink, but...)
Nightmare Fuel:
Top header: Make it dark red (#8b0000). Make the red "random media" button black.Space around text: Again, not sure what Satoshi meant or whether its applicable.
Negative space: Make it grey.
What say you?
