doin' a thing
...where one of the central aspects of the setting is a list of threats that magicians (wizards, whatever) must never face. One such threat was a set of "demons" who lived in a chaotic alternate dimension that magicians use for traveling - you can create and transform objects by force of will in this other dimension, and it turns out the demons have the same power on this side. Fortunately, they are vulnerable to water, of all things, so when there's an "outbreak," they're limited by geography, and our hero is able to trick them into the water with an image of their own dimension becoming like ours.
One of the other threats was a titanic creature that I can't help but remember as being jellyfish-like, that our hero has to confront in that other dimension. He communicates with it by conjuring huge stone walls with words on them, but it can drift right through them.
